Wild lions currently exist in sub-Saharan Africa and in Asia. There is a critically endangered population of lions in northwest India. They disappeared from North Africa, the Middle East and western Asia in historic times. Until about 10,000 years ago, lions were the most widespread large land mammal after the human being. In those times, lions were found in most of Africa, from western Europe to India, and in the Americas (from the Yukon to Peru).
